Monty Newman

Monty was born in Elk City, Oklahoma in 1955.  He moved to New Mexico when he was six months old growing up Portales and then Clovis.  He graduated from Clovis High School and went on to attend York College in Nebraska where he met Vicki Burleigh.

In 1974, Monty and Vicki were married and he convinced her to move back to Clovis. With his dad’s encouragement, Monty got his real estate license in 1977 and moved his family to Hobbs in 1978.  He has worked in Hobbs’ real estate for 40 years.  He is the founder of Newman & Company which recently celebrated 30 years in the business.

Monty has distinguished himself not only professionally but by investing in his community.  He served as President of the Realtors Association of New Mexico and has been named Realtor of the Year in New Mexico. He served as VP for Government Affairs for the National Association of REALTORS representing approximately 1.3 million members in 2005 and 2007.

Monty served on the New Mexico Junior College Board of Trustees for 9 years including 7 years as Chairman.  He was a city commissioner from 2002-2004.  In 2004, Monty was elected Mayor of Hobbs – only the second elected mayor in the City’s recent history.  He also served on the Board of Trustees for the University of Southwest and was recognized as the Trustee of Free Enterprise  from the University in 2016.

He is the past Chairman of the Economic Development Corporation of Lea County and Eddy-Lea Energy Alliance.  He served as Chairman of the New Mexico Republican Party from 2010-2012.

He has been married to his wife Vicki, a former public school teacher for 43 years and together, they have two sons – Ryan, a graduate of West Point, served in Iraq in 2003, before returning to the United State and completing law school, and Reagan, who graduated from New Mexico State University and is the controller for a private equity group. They have been members of Taylor Street Church of Christ since 1978.

The three primary pillars of Monty’s life: faith, family, and country – in the order. His best decision?  Becoming a Christian and marrying his wife.
